When doing something wrong, a voice whispers to you that what you’re doing is wrong, that voice is called a conscience, it’s quiet and doesn’t go away easily. You can’t pay your conscience to go away nor the resulting guilt, you can only numb it.
Meanness and cruelty are survival tactics, it’s what happens as a result of numbing guilt. Numbing guilt also gives birth to fear, fear of retaliation.
Fear is the driving force behind all evil, very similar to thirst for revenge and envy, a bottomless pit, an addiction and a trap you may never get out of and can pass from generation to generation.
We sometimes result to drugs, healthy living, exercise, religion, alcohol, work, sex and drawing tattoos among other things to distract ourselves from fear.
An alternative way might be to work on it. How to get there in mysticism is to start by first apologizing to your conscience over and over again, for as many times as possible. In Abrahamic religions, it’s done by confessing and asking for forgiveness.
Whichever road you choose to take, it’s serious work and when you remember how much work it took to get there, to get here, you’ll probably think twice before putting yourself through it again.
